SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT (YEAR A) AT SAINT VINCENT FERRER CATHOLIC CHURCH, MALUMFASHI
3/1/2026
The Holy Mass for the Second Sunday of Lent (Year A) commenced at exactly 9:00am with a solemn procession led by the officiating minister, Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Kelvin Obineche, accompanied by the seminarians, catechists, altar knights, and lectors.
The First Reading was taken from Genesis 12:1–4a.
The Responsorial Psalm was from Psalm 33: “May your merciful love be upon us, as we hope in you.”
The Second Reading was proclaimed from 2 Timothy 1:8b–10.
The Gospel reading was taken from Matthew 17:1–9 and was proclaimed by Seminarian Dan Asabe.
In his homily, the priest reflected on the Gospel reading and emphasized the three pillars of Lent: fasting, prayer, and almsgiving.
On fasting, he referenced Isaiah 58:3–9, reminding the faithful that true fasting is not marked by anger or injustice. He challenged parishioners to reflect on what they intend to fast from during Lent and urged them to avoid injustice, show love to one another, and share their food with the hungry.
Speaking on prayer, he cited Matthew 6:1–14, where Jesus teaches against practicing piety for public admiration. He encouraged parishioners to deepen their prayer life and actively participate in the Stations of the Cross during the week.
On almsgiving, he explained that charity is not limited to money. Helping those in need, visiting the sick, and supporting those struggling are all acts of almsgiving. He advised giving the best to the poor rather than worn-out items. Practicing these virtues, he noted, will make us better Christians at the end of Lent. He also encouraged the youth to reduce their social media activities during this sacred season. Special prayers were offered for families experiencing difficulties, asking God to grant them peace and resolution during this Lenten season. He also prayed for peace in Nigeria and the entire world.
The Creed was professed, followed by a powerful Prayer of the Faithful. The choir, particularly Zumunta Mata, rendered the beautiful song “Faman Mu Zai Kare” as requested by the officiating priest.
During the Presentation of Gifts and Offertory, the family of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph K. Bobai dedicated their daughter to God, while the family of Jonah Joseph offered a thanksgiving for God’s blessings upon them.
During the Liturgy of the Eucharist, the choir rendered the hymn “Thanksgiving of Amazing Grace” as the priest prepared the altar and the congregation for the sacred celebration.
Mr. Moses Samuel, representing the Director of Communications, Rev. Fr. Victor Chibuzor, introduced the Diocesan Communications Team to the parish and encouraged members to join and support the mission of evangelization through media.
From the Diocesan and Parish Communications Team, we wish you all a beautiful Sunday and a blessed week.
