MASS RETURNS TO ST DOMINIC CATHOLIC CHURCH AFTER YEARS OF INSECURITY. Katsina State, Nigeria
3/9/2026
For the first time in nearly three years, the faithful of St Dominic Catholic Church, Gidan Namune, an outstation of St Joseph’s Parish, Layin Minista in Katsina Diocese, gathered joyfully to celebrate Mass together. The church had been deserted due to persistent insecurity in the region, leaving the community without the Eucharistic celebration that forms the heart of Catholic worship.
The return was marked by overwhelming joy and deep emotion. Parishioners described the gathering as both a festive reunion and a solemn remembrance. Many recalled loved ones lost to banditry and violence, acknowledging the scars left on the community. Yet, amid grief, there was a prevailing spirit of hope — a conviction that “God knows better,” as one worshipper expressed.
The Mass was not only a liturgical milestone but also a communal act of resilience. Members of the church prayed fervently for peace, extending their petitions beyond their immediate community to the local government, Katsina State, Nigeria, and the world at large.
This event underscores the enduring role of faith in sustaining communities through hardship. In regions where insecurity has fractured social life, the reopening of a church for worship becomes more than a religious act — it is a symbol of survival, unity, and the possibility of renewal.
