The Catholic Youth Organization of Nigeria (CYON) Ambassadors of St. Martin’s De Porres Cathedral, Katsina, organised a “Pad the Girl” Project at St. Martin’s De Porres College, Katsina, aimed at educating female students on menstruation and menstrual hygiene while providing them with sanitary pads.
The programme commenced at 10:00 a.m., with female students of the college, teachers, and members of CYON in attendance.
Cathedral Administrator Commends CYON Initiative
The Cathedral Administrator and Principal of St. Martin’s De Porres College, Very Rev. Fr. Mathias Abbas Bakoshi, appreciated the CYON Ambassadors for the initiative and their commitment to supporting young girls.
He commended the youths for their service and prayed for God's continued blessings upon them as they dedicate themselves to initiatives that promote the wellbeing and development of young people.
Nurses Educate Students on Menstrual Hygiene
The programme featured a health education session led by nurses from the Federal Teaching Hospital, Katsina, Miss Modlyne Aka and Mrs. Emmanuella Adole.
The health professionals educated the students on menstruation and proper menstrual hygiene practices for growing girls.
They explained what menstruation is, highlighted the importance of maintaining good menstrual hygiene, and provided practical guidance on how young girls can properly care for themselves during their menstrual periods.
The session was highly interactive, as the students had the opportunity to ask questions on issues relating to menstruation and personal hygiene.
Several thoughtful questions were raised and addressed by Miss Modlyne Aka, providing the students with further understanding and practical knowledge.
Members of the CYON team present at the programme were also introduced to the students.
CYON Reaffirms Commitment to Supporting Young People
The CYON President, Mr. Chiekezie Kenneth Chinedu, delivered the vote of thanks on behalf of the organisation.
He expressed appreciation to the nurses for taking time from their schedules to participate in the programme and share their professional knowledge with the students.
He also thanked the students for their active participation and engagement throughout the session.
Addressing the students, the CYON President assured them that CYON remains committed to supporting them in every possible way, particularly as members of the Young Catholic Students (YCS).
Sanitary Pads Distributed to Students
As part of the project, sanitary pads were distributed to the female students.
The beneficiaries received the sanitary products with joy and appreciation, further underscoring the practical impact of the initiative.
The programme also provided an opportunity for the students to interact with the CYON Ambassadors and reflect on the lessons they had learnt during the health education session.
Photographs were taken at the conclusion of the activities as the students happily returned to their classrooms, continuing discussions on the lessons from the programme.
Programme Ends with Closing Prayer
The programme came to an end at 12:10 p.m. with a closing prayer led by the CYON President, Mr. Chiekezie Kenneth Chinedu.
The Pad the Girl Project stands as a commendable initiative by the CYON Ambassadors of St. Martin’s De Porres Cathedral, demonstrating the importance of youth-led service, health education, dignity, and practical support for young girls in the community.
