The Catholic Diocese of Katsina celebrated the Funeral Mass of Late Rt. Msgr. Joseph Keke on 6 May 2026 at St. Vincent Ferrer Parish, Malumfashi, bringing together bishops, priests, religious, family members, friends, and the lay faithful to give thanks for his life and commend his soul to the mercy of God.
The Funeral Mass commenced with a solemn procession led by the Catholic Bishop of Katsina Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Gerald Mamman Musa, alongside Most Rev. Dr. Habila Dabo, Catholic Bishop of Zaria Diocese. They were joined by priests from within and beyond the Diocese.
Also participating in the procession were Knights, Papal Medalists, catechists, lectors, altar servers, and other liturgical ministers.
Diocese Mourns and Celebrates a Life of Service
In his welcome address, Bishop Gerald Musa warmly received Bishop Habila Dabo, the visiting clergy from various dioceses, members of the family of the deceased, and the entire congregation.
He expressed gratitude for their presence and solidarity with the Diocese and the family of the late Monsignor during the solemn occasion of mourning, thanksgiving, and remembrance.
The Psalmody for the Office of the Dead was solemnly chanted by Rev. Fr. Nura Emmanuel and Rev. Fr. Musa Abubakar, setting a prayerful and reflective tone for the Funeral Mass.
The Liturgy of the Word followed, with readings appropriate for the celebration. The Gospel, taken from Luke 7:11–17, was proclaimed by Rev. Fr. Musa Abubakar.
Bishop Gerald Musa: A Life Well Lived in Service of God
In his homily, Most Rev. Dr. Gerald Mamman Musa reflected on the life, priestly ministry, and legacy of the late Rt. Msgr. Joseph Keke.
The Bishop noted that the gathering was not only an occasion to mourn the deceased but also an opportunity to celebrate a life well lived—a life characterized by dedication, service, humility, and unwavering faith.
He described the late Monsignor as a brother, father, and grandfather figure whose life was deeply rooted in the service of God and His Church. Bishop Musa highlighted the fact that Msgr. Keke dedicated more than five decades to faithful service in the vineyard of the Lord.
According to the Bishop, the late Monsignor's simplicity and humility remained evident throughout his many years of priestly ministry and the various responsibilities entrusted to him within the Church.
He described Msgr. Keke's life as a practical witness to the Gospel, emphasizing that his Christian faith was not merely something he preached but something he demonstrated through his daily life, acts of kindness, pastoral care, and devotion to God and His people.
“In Christ Shall All Be Made Alive”
Reflecting on the second reading and the teaching of St. Paul, the Bishop drew attention to the words: “For as in Adam all die, so in Christ shall all be made alive.”
He explained that although human existence is marked by weakness, frailty, and mortality, the Christian faith points beyond death to the promise of eternal life through Christ.
Bishop Musa therefore encouraged the faithful not to lose hope in the face of death but to trust in God's promise of resurrection and eternal life.
He called on the congregation to emulate the virtues that characterized the life of the late Monsignor, particularly his simplicity, commitment, humility, and faithfulness.
The Bishop reminded the faithful that true greatness is found not in status or recognition but in service, obedience, and fidelity to God.
He concluded his reflection by urging everyone present to remain steadfast in faith and to place their hope in Christ and the promise of the resurrection.
Faithful Commend Departed Priest to God's Mercy
The Liturgy of the Eucharist followed with the Prayer of the Faithful and the offertory procession. The celebration reached its solemn climax with the consecration of the Holy Eucharist.
The faithful received Holy Communion with deep reverence, united in prayer for the repose of the soul of the late Rt. Msgr. Joseph Keke.
The Knights and Papal Medalists also paid their final respects to the deceased priest.
Family Expresses Appreciation
On behalf of the family, Mr. Francis Keke expressed heartfelt appreciation to Bishop Gerald Musa and to all those who supported and stood by the late Monsignor throughout his lifetime and during the funeral rites.
He acknowledged the sacrifices, prayers, presence, and solidarity extended to the family during their period of bereavement.
In his vote of thanks, Very Rev. Fr. Luka Yohanna, Chancellor of the Diocese, conveyed appreciation on behalf of the Bishop to the various dioceses and representatives who attended the funeral, including Sokoto, Zaria, Kafanchan, and the Diocese of the Benin Republic.

In his remarks, Bishop Gerald Musa expressed sincere appreciation to Most Rev. Dr. Habila Dabo, Bishop of Zaria Diocese; Very Rev. Fr. Nuhu Iliya, Vicar General of Sokoto Diocese; and all individuals and institutions who contributed to the success of the funeral rites.
The Bishop also extended his condolences to the Diocese of Zaria over the death of their brother priest, Late Rev. Fr. Vincent, acknowledging the bond of fraternity and solidarity shared among the dioceses.

The Final Commendation was performed by Most Rev. Dr. Habila Dabo, who entrusted the soul of the late Rt. Msgr. Joseph Keke to the mercy and loving care of God.

The Funeral Mass and committal brought to a close the earthly journey of a priest who dedicated more than five decades to the service of God and the Church, as the faithful entrusted his soul to the Lord in the hope of the resurrection and eternal life.
