The Catholic Bishop of Katsina Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Gerald Mamman Musa, paid a pastoral visit to St. Joseph Layin Minista Parish on 1 May 2026, where he celebrated the Holy Mass, administered the Sacrament of Confirmation to 125 candidates, blessed five marriages, and encouraged the faithful to remain steadfast in their Christian witness.
The liturgical celebration commenced with a solemn procession led by the Bishop, accompanied by the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Solomon Shidi, Rev. Fr. Victor Chibuzor, and Rev. Fr. Bishop Calls Christians to Be Light in Difficult Times
The Liturgy of the Word featured readings for the celebration, with the Gospel proclaimed by Rev. Fr. Solomon Shidi from Matthew 5:13–16, in which Christ calls His followers to be “the salt of the earth” and “the light of the world.”
In his homily, Bishop Gerald Musa expressed his joy at celebrating with the faithful of Layin Minista Parish and its outstations, including Gidan Waje, Gidan Iliya, Kude, Gidan Maidaji, and Kankara.
Reflecting on the Gospel, the Bishop reminded the faithful that being the light of the world requires Christians to live in a manner that reflects Christ, particularly during challenging moments.
He encouraged the faithful to become instruments of hope, peace, goodness, and encouragement, stressing that Christians must not allow difficult circumstances to prevent them from witnessing to their faith.
To illustrate his message, Bishop Musa narrated the story of a man who, despite having once lived a good life, later became addicted to alcohol and went astray. His wife, however, remained patient and prayerful, trusting in God's power to transform her husband.
After many years, the man eventually repented and changed his life. Having experienced transformation, he began encouraging young people and warning them against the mistakes he had once made. The Bishop used the story to demonstrate how a person who once lived in darkness can, through God's grace, become a source of light to others.
The Holy Spirit Empowers the Faithful
Drawing from the first reading, the Bishop emphasized the power of the Holy Spirit, noting that those who are filled with the Spirit are empowered to accomplish great things for God and His people.
Reflecting on the second reading, he noted that the persecution experienced by the early Christians, although painful, ultimately contributed to the spread of the Gospel to different parts of the world.
Bishop Musa therefore urged the candidates preparing to receive Confirmation to remain firm in their faith and not to be afraid or ashamed to identify themselves with Christ.
He encouraged them to allow the Holy Spirit to guide their decisions and daily lives, reminding them that the Sacrament of Confirmation strengthens Christians for faithful witness and service.
Addressing the couples whose marriages were to be blessed, the Bishop encouraged them to remain faithful to their vocation, love one another sincerely, and strive to make their homes places where Christ's light can be seen and experienced.
125 Candidates Receive the Sacrament of Confirmation
A major highlight of the celebration was the administration of the Sacrament of Confirmation to 125 candidates.
The Bishop laid hands on the candidates and anointed them with sacred chrism, invoking the gifts and strengthening presence of the Holy Spirit upon them.
The Bishop urged the newly confirmed to embrace their Christian responsibilities with courage and to become authentic witnesses of Christ in their families, communities, and wider society.
Five Couples Receive Marriage Blessing
The celebration also featured the blessing of the marriages of five couples.
The couples reaffirmed their commitment to love, unity, fidelity, and mutual support as they entrusted their married lives and families to God.
In his exhortation to the couples, Bishop Musa encouraged them to remain faithful to their vocation and to allow Christian love to guide their relationships, homes, and interactions with others.

The Eucharistic celebration continued with the Prayer of the Faithful, the offertory procession, and the consecration of the Holy Eucharist. The faithful participated reverently in the celebration and received Holy Communion.
